This is primarily a simple exploration in taking a digital medium and making it analog. I wanted to see my favorite side scrolling game as a scroll. The box is much like the Nintendo console used to play Super Mario Bros., both the box and the Nintendo are the means to view the game. The character of Mario has been left out of the print so that viewers can superimpose their own memories of Mario jumping from platform to platform, using their imaginations instead of buttons.
Modifying a digital game by moving elements of the game to older forms or media. I decided to present video game landscapes from Super Mario by using printmaking techniques. Digital imagery was transformed by using woodcut printing, and by adding a new micro narrative in the title: “In Hindsight Could Time Have Been Better Spent?” I was asking myself, “What else could I have done with my time when I was younger? How would I see the world differently had I read Fortune Magazine instead of playing Mario Brothers? Would I be the same artist? In the end, I created a nostalgic piece that questions how we would be different had we been doing other things with our time. Printmaking, like game playing, is time consuming and repetitious. Would a different media have changed the effect of the game?
